Plan ahead for a future home elevator installation in a new home with these tips from Crown Elevator. Incorporate these specifications into your home design, and save time and money when it is time to add a residential lift. Your contractor or architect can also help to ensure your building plans meet local requirements.
An Elevator-Ready Home
Ideally, a home elevator is added during home construction, but when timing or budget is an issue, you can prep your home layout to accommodate a home elevator addition when you are ready.

Available Floor Space for the Hoistway
When designing your floor plan, reserve at least 25 square feet in an unblocked area where you would like your home elevator. On each level, plan for this same space in the same location. This multi-level stacked space can be used as closets or alcoves until you are ready to add the elevator.
The Pit
You will need a minimum depth of 10 inches for the pit. A 12-inch pit is the best size for most residential elevators.
The Rail Wall
Plan ahead and do not run any lines or plumbing in a wood framed rail wall. Fill the cells of a concrete block rail solidly, top to bottom.
The Equipment Area and Machine Room
To prepare for smooth pulling through the shaft to the machine room, run two 2-inch PVC pipes with sweeping 90’s.
Electrical and Phone Lines
You will need 220v 30 amp and 120v 15 amp electric lines to the machine room location. You will also need a low voltage line from the modem to the machine room.
Space for Elevator Doors
Ensure enough space for landing doors. Give enough distance between the hoistway face of the hoistway doors and the hoistway edge for future swinging doors.
